Description:
Interesting coastal strip characterized by an alternation of dune strings and rocky outcrops, represented by Miocene limestone, limestone and marl. In
backdunal portion small brackish marsh depressions are found, subject to periodic submersion by meteoric waters mixed with those
marine, which arrive there by infiltration through the sandbar or during storm surges. These coastal habitats are affected by aspects of vegetation
psammophilous, both annual (Cakiletea maritimae and Malcolmetalia) and perennial (Ammophiletea), from halophilous rock vegetation of the Crithmo-Limonietea, from aspects of
scrub of the Oleo-Caratonion, from perennial marsh vegetation of Sarcocornietea fruticosae and annual of Thero-Salicornietea and Saginetea maritimae, from
helophyte aspects of the Juncetea maritimi. The steppe grasslands of the Lygeo-Stipetea and ephemeral lawns of the Trachynetalia distachyae are also frequent. The
bioclimate of the coastal strip of south-eastern Sicily is part of the dry thermo-Mediterranean area with average annual temperatures above 18 ° C and rainfall
annual averages of about 400 mm.
4.2Quality and importance
The importance of the site is linked to the extreme rarity with which it is possible to find along the coastal strip of southern Sicily dune environments with some
small marsh depressions affected by a psammophilous vegetation and in a good state of conservation, refuge for migratory birds. It houses an avifauna
relatively rich and an invertebrate fauna that includes stenoecies, endemic or rare species, sometimes extremely localized in Sicily
