San Nicola is a flat territory occupied by the Carini of the late Roman and Islamic-Norman periods, before it moved to the present cliff for defense purposes. In 1873 the unexpected discovery, in the Ferranti property, of a large floor in opus vermiculatus
that G. De Spuches managed to transport it and place it in the Palazzo Galati in Palermo; according to Salinas it was part of an early Christian apsidal basilica. Excavations have only recently resumed: in 1997, 2009 and again in 2011-12, the latter aimed at ascertaining the archaeological interest
for a request to enlarge the cemetery. (Text source: Giovanni Mannino Piero Galati: Carini Archaeological Map)
