In Catania the citadel of the sulfur, the industrial area created for the processing of sulfur, north-east of the current Catania Central Station, which had been abandoned for some time, was recovered in the seventies by integrating new and old and creating Le Ciminiere a fair, exhibition and conference area. The agglomeration of refining and milling plants and chimneys occupied an area equal to the entire historic center, testifying to the importance of the sulfur sector for the Catania economy of the time.
