Birthplace, via Castrofilippo 1, Palermo
Giovanni Falcone was born in Palermo on May 18, 1939 in via Castrofilippo 1, in a house, later demolished in 1959, overlooking Piazza Magione, in the heart of the ancient Kalsa district, "with its sumptuous and elegant buildings, palm trees and that atmosphere that every moment brought back to the Arab origins of the neighborhood …… .Not far from there lived some of the most bloodthirsty bosses that he would have pursued during his career as a magistrate ”(Maria Falcone, 2012). The house where he was born, decorated with frescoes and tapestries on the walls, belonged to Pietro Bonanno, his grandmother's brother, beloved mayor of Palermo from 1904 until the day of his untimely death, in 1905. "He had been Councilor for Public Works and the city for longer she was always very grateful to him, so much so that she dedicated streets and villas to him ... ... Among other things, she had made the way to the sanctuary of Santa Rosolia passable, completed the Teatro Massimo, opened the baths in the sea for the poor and carried out projects for the construction of a hospital… .. This uncle was therefore a model and a reason for family pride ”(Maria Falcone, 2012). His father Arturo, mutilated by war, was the director of the Provincial Chemical Laboratory, his mother, Luisa Bentivegna, was the daughter of a well-known gynecologist in the city. Stefania, paternal aunt, was a talented musician. Aunt Carmela is a talented painter. The family context sensitive to cultural and civil values decisively influenced the formation of the young Falcone.
