Giovanni Grasso is remembered as the greatest Sicilian tragic actor and one of the greatest in Italy. He began his activity in the show at the Opera dei Pupi managed by his father Angelo. The theatrical career was initiated by Nino Martoglio. Alongside the famous poet and with an important theatrical company composed among others by Virginia Balistrieri, Angelo Musco, Rocco Spadaro, Giacinta Pezzana and Totò Majorana he interpreted several successful works such as the Rattle Hat, Feudalism, Civil Death, Stone on stone and the Cavalleria rusticana acting on the most important stages in Italy and then internationally: Spain, South America, France, England, Germany, Russia, United States. He also acted in silent cinema of which he is considered a pioneer in the international arena with the film directed by Nino Martoglio Lost in the dark.

He was also known as Giovanni Grasso senior, to distinguish him from his minor cousin of the same name, known as Giovanni Grasso junior. (Source: wikipedia)
