Il turn is a novel by Luigi Pirandello, written in 1895, but published in 1902. Compared to the previous novel (The excluded) and to the next (The late Mattia Pascal), it is undoubtedly a lesser known work. After the myth of honor derided in “L'esclusa”, here the myth of stuff, of explicit realist derivation, is targeted. The story aims to demonstrate the unpredictability of the cases that govern human life, before which it seems senseless to plan the future in a rational way. (Barberi Squarotti. History and anthology of literature. Vol. 5)

From the novel a film with the same title was made, directed by Tonino Cervi in 1982.

The novel is inspired by Don Marcantonio Ravì's plan to give his young daughter Stellina as a wife to Don Diego Alcozér, who is old, but very rich and a veteran of four marriages and as many widowers. If his daughter marries him, on the death of the old man, who by now cannot be late, she will be rich and will be able to marry her suitor Pepè Alletto, a somewhat foolish and vain young man, with whom she is in love, who therefore will have to wait for a little bit his "turn". The project goes through: Don Diego Alcoréz marries Stellina amid the malicious comments of the city. However, it happens that Don Diego, close to the young bride, feels more and more lively and healthy and shows no intention of leaving this world, even when he is hit by a bad pneumonia, from which he miraculously recovers, to the disappointment of Stellina who does not he resigns himself to such an absurd marriage. Fortunately, his brother-in-law intervenes, the lawyer Ciro Coppa, widower of a sister of Pepè, a violent and irascible man, who, to favor Pepè, manages to obtain the cancellation of Stellina's marriage due to lack of consent. But also this time Pepè realizes that his "turn" has not yet arrived, because Stellina marries the lawyer Ciro Coppa. It will only come when the lawyer dies of apoplexy during a court discussion with the king's procurator.
