Marianna Ucria is a 1997 film, directed by Roberto Faenza, based on the novel The long life of Marianna Ucrìa (1990) by Dacia Maraini.
In 1743, in Palermo, Duke Signoretto brings his thirteen-year-old niece Marianna Ucria in vain, who being deaf and dumb communicates via a slate, to attend a hanging, hoping that the execution will give her back the word. Later the girl's mother, Maria, forces her daughter to marry her elderly uncle Pietro, brother of Maria and cousin of her deceased husband, with whom in the following four years Marianna has three daughters and finally the coveted son.
Later the tutor of the children, Grass, taught her the language of signs, introduced her to a new philosophical ideal, the Enlightenment, but above all instilled in her self-esteem and the desire for independence from her husband. The relationship between Marianna and Grass, however, is hindered by the younger brother of the girl, a priest, who convinces the brother-in-law to remove the tutor from the palace.
Marianna, however, is now resolute. Having been initiated into modernity by Grass, the woman refuses to give herself to her husband again. The grieving man kills the Sisina goat he loved so much with his own hands and dies soon after. Left a widow, Marianna regains possession of her existence, with an attitude that translates into a relationship with Saro, brother of the servant Fila, but above all in the search for the reasons for her silence, which lie in a secret that the family has always kept silent from: the sexual violence suffered by Pietro when he was a child
