The places of the cinematic story: Tano to die

Places included in the IWB register of the Sicily Region (Places of literary, television and filmic narrative) - Subcategory "Places of the mafia in cinematographic narration" - Valenza LIM: "Tano to die", 1997, directed by Roberta Torre

Roberta Torre in 1997 got the brilliant idea of a musical about the mafia, grotesque and psychedelic, colorful and theatrical, entrusting all the musical part and the writing of the songs to Nino D'Angelo, who - thanks to critical success - revives from a moment of decline. It all starts with a real news story: the murder of the butcher of Palermo's Vucciria, Tano Guarrasi, actually a powerful mafia boss. Torre tells the story for flashback unconnected and non-consequential dream parts, starting with the murder and going backwards to investigate family relationships and mafia connections. The story is studded with songs, choreographies, grotesque scenes a la Almodovar and found worthy of Kusturica, found original and ingenious, paginated with spiral fades that take you back in time and are underlined by a masterful black and white photography, curated by Daniele Ciprì . A tribute to the Sicilian lifestyle, a dip into the past of the Vucciria district of Palermo, including musical references to Saturday night fever (Simme 'a mafia) - during Tano's mafia initiation - and an original rap to commemorate the death of the boss ('O rap' and Tano). The plot is quite simple, it unfolds in time jumps narrating the story of a mafioso (Tano) and his family, narrating childhood, criminal affiliation and death, up to the marriage of the boss's sister and the subsequent new mafia crime. Many found unusual, such as the use of a sort of Greek tragedy chorus spotted in a group of gossipers in the hairdresser's shop commenting on the events. In addition there is the narrator who leads the viewer by the hand, presenting the various characters, highlighted by a theatrical spotlight, as if their moment as protagonists had come. Parts that exploit cartoons (dancing skulls, comic flashes ...), comedy slapstick, sudden fades, funeral time to music, background based on Ciuri ciuri e A luna in miezzo o 'mare, colorful photography, backdrops deliberately thanks to , excessive and mafia choreography that sing and dance as if they were at a party.

Tano to die for it was screened with great success at the 1997 Venice Film Festival, obtained the International Critics' Week Prize and the Leone del Futuro Prize - Opera Prima, with the special mention Fipresci. David di Donatello to Roberta Torre as best new director and to Nino D'Angelo as best musician. Tre Nastri d'Argento: Best New Director, Best Supporting Actresses and Best Score. Nino D'Angelo is important for the success of a grotesque and bizarre film, played Pasolinian way by actors taken from the street (the credits highlight the real jobs), a mafia movie musical, very American, as in Italy it had never been thought of. Roberta Torre invents her own style, goes from documentary to musical, from film truth to surreal, shoots a film that touches the trash without ever falling into it, remaining in the balance between popular cinema and arthouse films, supported by a very original soundtrack. The songs and music of Nino D'Angelo make up a well-composed mix of Neapolitan and Sicilian sounds, melodic music as in his old films and disco music, but also rap, rock and roll, samba and techno. The Neapolitan composer sings only one piece: 'A tamurriata d''e spioni, which runs on a succession of faces of unlikely mafia repentants, but writes a series of songs that give an even more grotesque tone to the story, given that we are in Palermo but most of the songs are sung in the Neapolitan dialect, according to the rules of the drama. Nino D'Angelo had already worked with Roberta Torre in the documentary Life in the flight of an angel, where he played the part   of himself. The DVD of Tano to die for, published by San Paolo, presents a fundamental extra such as Notes for a film about Tano, with all the studies and casting work carried out by the director before setting to work. Cult moment in a dialogue, which we also find in Clipboard: “The mafia is like the law, only it's not authorized. Even the law makes people pay for things, taxes, services. The mafia charges protection money, but that's one thing pretty, because afterwards you can feel comfortable and nothing happens to you, indeed, if you need something, you find friends willing to help you. Here, with the mafia you pay to have friends ”. An interesting movie.
