Schienaldo cave
The cave came to light in 1977 by breaking through the crumbling limestone foot of the Raffagnino coast upstream of Poggio Schienaldo for the motorway route. Inside the cavity, an intact Upper Pleistocene deposit with mammalian bones, turtle shells, etc. emerged.
Upon hearing the news, I stopped the work by giving Enzo Burgio, of the Department of Geology, the opportunity to collect the precious finds. In a joint inspection by the Superintendency-University (in the presence of Prof. Vincenzo Tusa and Prof. Ruggeri) the
stay in the cave and its closure was ordered. This happened by leaning against the opening, with the mechanical shovel, a large boulder and on this some debris. The cave remains about ten meters before the windowed tunnel (rockfall) in the upstream lane, higher than the roadway.
