Description

Xerri cave (Xerris grotto)

Location: Xagħra, Gozo, Malta

It was discovered in 1923/24 by Anthony Xerri while he was digging a well. The cave is located about 10 meters deep. It is accessed via a spiral staircase, built in the space originally excavated for the well. The cave itself contains numerous alabaster stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are of interesting shape and
particular and variable height from 25 cm to 1 meter. It is important to remember that a few centimeters of growth can take thousands of years and therefore this serves to indicate the actual age of these stalactites and stalagmites.
There are also other interesting formations that have developed as a result of the calcification of tree roots. The cave is privately managed and entrance tickets can be purchased on site.
