Cave of San Calogero in Thermis in Casa Professa
Piazza Casa Professa, under the church of the Gesù. Christian catacomb of the IV, V century AD
From the museum area on the ground floor, a short ramp leads down to an underground cave that leads to the obsolete burial area reserved for the Jesuit fathers. The place is also identified with the name of Antro of S. Calogero in reference to the ancient underground church of "S. Calogero in ThermisWhich according to tradition, was the residence and place of prayer of the Blessed Calogero who lived in Palermo in the 53th century. AD The Crypt is divided into two irregular quadrangular rooms dug entirely into the rock; the first room houses two altars while the second room, with a vaulted roof, has some semicircular niches on the walls and the effigy of the Virgin and Child emerges from traces of wall painting. Leaning against the walls are the drains originally closed by slate slabs in which the mortal remains of the brothers were deposited, as long as they had not undergone the slow drying process.
