Grotto of Maccagnone
Note: Georeferencing for guidance to be reviewed!
Cavity with paleontological and anthropozoic deposit (Source: Landscape Guidelines)
The cave has a roughly triangular plan, with irregular sides of about 15 m each, embedded by the sea halfway up the slopes of Rocca Rossa in the Montagna Longa. It houses a flock of about twenty units. A reworked deposit emerges on the floor with few traces of Pleistocene fauna and some boulders fallen from the vault. The cave was investigated by the English paleontologist H. Falconer in 1859 who carried out surveys and published the results among the best of the time. The man in the Maccagnone cave is represented only with some concretionary flint concreted into the ceiling. About ten meters north of the cave, the remains of a hippo deposit emerge in the open.
