Description

Cave of the Foxes

The cave has a small entrance, difficult to identify and little known, at the foot of the short cliff that borders the north-western slope of the Costa del Carpineto, one of the mountains that borders the Conca d'Oro. It is advisable to reach it starting from Portella del Garrone and halfway there
coast, for about a km. The internal environment is very ventilated and humid, inhospitable for men, it would seem suitable for the dead, judging by some human bones brought to light by numerous foxes that frequent an environment with its own entrance a dozen meters south of the main one. To the interest of some burials, which must be verified, with an excavation in the first room, there is to add that of the "water way". This is about a hundred meters long, in the most uncomfortable or slippery points, there are mostly fragments of jars. The "way" ends with a chimney
about 7 meters high which reaches the edge of a "pond" in which a few hectoliters of dripping water are collected. On the brink, the first explorers in 1960 were surprised to find an olla with a capacity of about twenty liters, without the bottom. This olla has an elliptical mouth, a typical element of the Piano Quartana culture. Even the fragments collected along the road, such as an “apicata” loop in shimmering red from the Malpasso culture, are reconciled with the olla of the lake. From the findings collected, we can speak of a rather short frequentation of the cave in time, limited to the end of the Eneolithic. The materials are kept in the “A.Salinas” Archaeological Museum. F ° 249 II SW, Monreale; UTM: UC48100854, Altitude: 1090 m, Length 170 m.
