Description

Grotta dell'Aquila

Rocca dell'Aquila, 509 m, is the extreme western extension of the ridge of Monte Montanello, 964 m, of the Montagna Longa group. The entrance to the cave, little more than a hole, is visible only in the vicinity of a few meters, it opens up among very articulated rocks; a possible stain of
vegetation could hide it completely, it would not be easy to find it. Among the various access routes I recommend a longer route, at the same time shorter, because it is more comfortable: about 40 minutes of walking. From the Margi drinking trough, which can be reached by car from Terrasini, continue on foot halfway up the slope in the Bosco Santo Canale, leave the territory of Cinisi and take that of Carini, then proceeding zigzag until you see the overhangs of the Costa delle Fastuche, take the path that descends precipitously in the mentioned valley, walk about twenty meters: the entrance is on the right hand. Going down a few steps you are inside the cave, the torch, rotating it illuminates it all, the normal major axis at the entrance measures just over eight, the smaller one is almost half of the first, the height slightly exceeds a couple of meters. The central part of the cavity is paved with stones probably placed on purpose. Opposite the entrance, the ground is affected by two deep holes dug for the capture of porcupines that have intercepted some burials. The holes show a section about one meter high and the same in width, in which it seemed to us to be able to distinguish three archaeological levels. We have collected a total of 85 clay fragments now kept at the Municipal Library of Carini. Elsewhere we have described and classified the finds from the Eneolithic and Bronze Age. F ° 249 III NE Carini; UTM: 33 SUC56682032; Altitude: 490 m. (Text source: Giovanni Mannino Piero Galati: Carini Archaeological Map)
