Cave of Saints
Description

Cave of Saints

'Byzantine oratory, called the Cave of the Saints by the peasants for the sacred images. The cave, dug in the Byzantine period, has a circular plan with a pillar in the center that holds up the ceiling, 2 meters high. Inside there is a pictorial cycle that goes from the XNUMXth century to the XNUMXth century. Among the frescoes painted on the pillar, the one of the Madonna is valuable, the Crucified Jesus is significant, among images faded due to the humidity of the wall. The religious depictions inside the cave are evidence of the religiosity of the inhabitants. Even further down, tourists can visit the catacomb known as the Catacomb of the Cyclops, outside which there are remains of early Christian tombs.
