GAM Sant'Anna Modern Art Gallery

Via Sant'Anna, 21b.

La Empedocle Restivo Modern Art Gallery is a civic museum of modern art located in via Sant'Anna, in the Kalsa district of the historic center of Palermo.

The museum complex consists of two buildings joined in historical times: the former Franciscan convent of the church of Sant'Anna la Misericordia, in Baroque style, and the adjacent Catalan Gothic Palazzo Bonet.

The gallery exhibits works by important artists such as Giovanni Boldini, Massimo Campigli, Carlo Carrà, Felice Casorati, Eustachio Catalano, Giorgio De Chirico, Ettore De Maria Bergler, Emilio Greco, Renato Guttuso, Nino Franchina, Lia Pasqualino Noto, Antonino Leto, Salvatore Lo Forte, Francesco Lojacono, Luigi Lojacono, Vincenzo Ragusa, Pippo Rizzo, Mario Rutelli, Aleardo Terzi, Onofrio Tomaselli, Mario Sironi, Franz von Stuck.

The first civic gallery of modern art was born in 1910 and is located in the Ridotto of the Politeama theater, which had to be a temporary seat also due to the lack of space, was created by the strong will of Empedocle Restivo, to whom it was soon dedicated[1].

The seat at the Politeama theater immediately appeared not suited to the Gallery, but for economic reasons it was left in that position until the present day, when the seventeenth-century monumental complex Sant'Anna was restored, the Gallery was moved in December 2006 and took the name of GAM Palermo.

On 21 December 2007 the collection was enriched thanks to the donation of two sculptures by Giorgio De Chirico (“Ettore and Andromaca” and “Oreste and Pilade”) from the Bilotti collection.

The museum complex consists of two adjacent buildings: Palazzo Bonet and the former Franciscan convent of the church of Sant'Anna. The gallery has a third extension in Palazzo Ziino: the first floor houses the plaster casts gallery, previously kept together with the rest of the collections in the old seat of the Politeama theater, the second floor is used as a space for temporary exhibitions.
