Fortress of Charles V - Portopalo di Capo Passero

Fortress Charles V

In the eastern part of the island stands the Fortress of Charles V, commissioned by the Aragonese Emperor to monitor the presence of Saracen pirates in the Ionian and Mediterranean waters. It was destroyed in 1526 by a well-known and dangerous privateer of the time, the Pirate Dragut. After a few years the tower was restored by the Superintendency of the City of Noto. Completely ceased the pirate raids, the tower fell into disuse and was abandoned. Today the Tower of Charles V is in an excellent state of conservation even if it has undergone some restoration work to make it safe so that it could be easily visited by tourists. The facade is trapezoidal in shape and has a very massive structure
