Lava gorges of the Simeto River (ITA070026)

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA070026 - Hectares: 1377

Description:

The site falls on the western side of Etna and is mainly represented by the bed of the Simeto river which in some points forms narrow gorges dug
in lava flows. The substrates, in addition to the basaltic coulters, are made up of silty-clayey river deposits. The altitudes are between 200 and 900 m, while the
bioclimate is between the thermo-Mediterranean and the mesomediterranean with a superior dry ombrotype. The most significant vegetational aspects are the hygrophilous ones
represented by riparian thickets with various species of Salix, as well as by tamariceti rich in oleander. Along the banks of the river there are amphibious aspects ad
Apium nodiflorum and Nasturtium officinale, and helophyte formations in Phragmites and Typha. Aspects of scrub can be found on the rocky ridges in Euphorbia
dendroides or, more rarely, small strips of deciduous oak woods with Quercus virgiliana.
4.2Quality and importance
This area has a significant landscape interest due to the presence of spectacular lava gorges modeled by the waters of the Simeto River. They are found
in addition, various entities that in the regional area are rare or considered to be of significant phytogeographic interest, in turn mentioned in the list in the section
3.3 (D). Of particular interest are the freshwater invertebrate fauna with numerous endemic and / or rare species, stenotopes and stenoecias.
