Fountain of Orion
LOCATION: Piazza Duomo DATE: 1553 DESCRIPTION: Work by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli. The structure is pyramidal and has overlapping tanks. above Orion with his dog Sirio at his feet. Under 4 cherubs riding dolphins from whose mouths water comes out and pours into the cup below. This is followed by 4 naiads and 4 newts in increasingly larger tanks. The base has a dodecagonal plan on which develops, on three steps, the real source which, returning, houses four tanks that receive water from amphorae held by as many bearded figures lying down representing the rivers Nile, Tiber, Ebro and Camaro.
