Description

Fountain of the two dragons

The fountain was built in 1630 on a project by the artist Mariano Smiriglio, it is composed of a vaguely circular marble basin. There are two dragons on the edge of the basin, also marble, placed opposite each other. The two mythological figures pour water into the fountain through their mouths. The entire work is located near a road widening protected by an iron gate from the same period. It is located outside the historic walls in the road once known as Mezzomonreale, today Corso Calatafimi, because it was a passageway between Palermo and Monreale.

Curiosity:
A curious acoustic phenomenon occurs at the ends of the semicircular wall that delimits the widening in which the fountain is located: whoever is at one of the ends of the wall can clearly hear what is being said, even in a low voice, by a person who is at the opposite end of the same, which is not possible for anyone who is in the space between the two on this side of the gate.
