Seabed Mouth of the Irminio River
Site type : SCI – Special Area of Conservation
Code : ITA080010 – Hectares : 1514
Description:
The mouth of the Irminio river is located along the sandy coast between Marina di Ragusa and Donnalucata, characterized by a magnificent dune system and
retrodunal. The marine area in front of the mouth hosts a Posidonieto, well structured both in the components of the upper layer and of the substrate (Giaccone et al.,
1985), which extends as far as Donnalucata. Occasionally, scattered tufts of Cymodocea nodosa are also present.
The presence of Posidonia oceanica meadows shows that the area in front of the mouth of the Irminio river is only moderately compromised by the polluting effects
from neighboring areas (Giaccone et al., 1985). The area must also be preserved to prevent the land area, which is very interesting, from being able to
be negatively affected.
