Seabed of Taormina - Isola Bella (ITA030040)

Site type: SIC: Site of Community Interest

Code: ITA030040- Hectares: 140

The seabeds of Taormina are characterized by a remarkable variety of morphologies. In fact, the cliffs of Isola Bella, Capo Taormina and Capo S. Andrea coexist with the landslides of large boulders that slope from a few meters down to a depth of sixty meters in the central part of the inlet. Between the island and the two promontories delimiting the bay there are two small beaches of gravel mixed with coarse sands that continue underwater with wide stretches of fine sands. In an area of a few square kilometers the typology of benthic marine vegetation varies considerably due to the diversity of the substrates. Indeed on Posidonia oceanica is present in mobile substratum, which forms well-structured lawns while on a rocky substrate the vegetation cover is characterized by populations photophiles, in particular those of Cystoseira amentacea and Cystoseira brachycarpa are well represented and more deeply from populations to Dictyotaceae and Sphacelariacea.

The plant populations of hard substrate of the infralittoral, although not reflecting the typical zoning of the Mediterranean for all its extension, are however well structured and maintain a high biodiversity. The presence of Posidonia oceanica meadows is significant
