Seabed of Brucoli - Agnone (ITA090026)
Site type: SIC - Site of Community Interest
Code: ITA090026 - Hectares: 1338
Description:
The seabed of the area in question is mainly sandy, sometimes muddy. The bay of Brucoli is the most interesting area due to the presence of a large prairie a
Dense and well structured Posidonia oceanica. This one about a hundred meters from the coastline rises up to the surface creating a "récif barrière" which
delimits a lagoon area colonized by Cymodocea nodosa. The bay therefore shows the typical spatial succession of marine phanerogams, quite rare for
Sicilian coasts. In neighboring areas the Posidonia prairie becomes discontinuous and a scarce algal cover settles on small rocky boulders.
mainly from Cystoseira spinosa v. tenuior, Padina pavonica and Stypocaulon scoparium (Serio & Pizzuto 1999). Caulerpa settles in this area
racemosa, allochthonous species, which forms meadows in close contact with Posidonia oceanica without significant interactions between the two species (Serio &
Pizzuto 1999) .The area outside the bay, in the direction of Agnone, does not have significant coverage values of benthic populations.
4.2Quality and importance
The bay of Brucoli is an area of particular environmental interest, not only for the large presence of Posidonia oceanica, but also for the typical blockbuster in
seagrass, quite rare in our seas.
