Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA020018 - Hectares: 2095

Description:

The site is located on the northern coast of Sicily, between the provinces of Palermo and
Messina; it extends for 2083,25 hectares, involving the territories of the municipalities of Pollina, San Mauro
Castelverde, Tusa and Pettineo. The biotope includes the terminal stretch of the Pollina River up to the mouth, in addition to the
internal ridge that develops east of the watercourse. Among the highest peaks are those of Cozzo
Schifo (640 m), Monte Tardara (645 m), Cozzo Uccello (767 m), Pizzo S. Elia (600 m), Cozzo Morto (841 m),
Pizzo Taverna (1027 m). The geological structure of the area is mainly expressed by formations
silico-arenaceous, consisting mainly of sedimentary rocks, such as quartzarenites and brown pelites, distributed in
strata, according to the classical organization of the Numidian flysch; deposits alternate in the valley floor

alluvial. As far as the bioclimate is concerned, the coastal zone is part of the thermo-Mediterranean (temperature> 16
° C) sub-humid (rainfall = 600-700 mm), while the innermost hilly area tends towards the mesomediterranean
(temperature = 13-16 ° C) sub-humid-humid (rainfall = 600-1000 mm). The plant landscape is
mainly dominated by more or less degraded cork forests, sometimes alternating with nuclei of deciduous oak forests
and crop residues. Along the mouth of the Pollina River, aspects of woods and woods are quite well represented
ripali shrubs dominated by Tamarix africana.

Biotope of considerable flora and fauna, phytocenotic and landscape interest, which is an important one
naturalistic-environmental junction point between the orographic ridges of the Madonie and that of the Nebrodi.
The forest formations dominated by Quercus suber e are particularly interesting and extensive
deciduous oaks, within which there are various rare entities or entities of significant phytogeographic value,
precisely reported in the list in section 3.3 (D). The mouth of the Pollina river and the river course
relocate various bird species along the migration route, especially during the autumn migration
