Chronological News
The Ascension Day commemorates the day the city was founded. In fact, the discovery of the Florida peninsula is attributed to Juan Ponce de Leon who in 1513 arrived on the beach of Floridia probably on the day of Easter of flowers (Pascha floridum). Ascension Day has been solemnly celebrated in the Province of Syracuse since the time when Christianity took root in the Syracusan territory. Over the centuries this festival became a real occasion of recurrences linked to spring, so it was customary to celebrate the arrival of the beautiful spring season with this festival. In the ancient Xiridia (current Floridia) of the fifteenth century it was then thought to combine a chivalrous palio with these celebrations. So in the distant 1461 the "Palio dell'Ascensione" officially arose. From 1700 onwards this festival was made to coincide with that consecrated to the "Madonna".

Description
The week before the "Ascension Sunday" numerous musical and theatrical performances, exhibitions related to local crafts and food and wine festivals are held in Floridia to introduce any visitors to the typical products of Syracuse.
On Ascension Sunday, in the morning, the city of Floridia wakes up to the sound of salvos and to the music of the city band that parades through the streets. Solemn Eucharistic Functions consecrated to the "Ascension of Christ" are celebrated in the Mother Church; at the same time an important city cycling race is held. In the afternoon the horse racing competition takes place through the streets of the city, where numerous jockeys from all over the Syracusan province compete against each other, but also from other areas of Sicily (in particular from Catania, Messina and Palermo). The horses, placed in special cages, leave all together (the so-called "Stowed“) And run through the city streets until they reach the finish line. The races of the palio are elimination, the first horse to reach the finish line qualifies for the following races, while the others are either rescued or eliminated from the race. The races are held throughout the week and reach their climax on the "Ascension Sunday", where in the final race the winner of the Palio is decreed, covered with glory by the Floridian citizenship. The finalists of the "Palio dell'Ascensione" parade together with sumptuous Sicilian carts followed by a procession of figures in Sicilian costume who, after having crossed all the main city streets, triumphantly enter Piazza del Popolo and are cheerfully acclaimed by the people present. In the evening, after the solemn Vespertina Mass in honor of the "Ascent to Heaven of Christ" there is the awarding of the winners of the horse race and cycling race.
The celebrations are closed by a spectacular artificial fire that worthily closes the celebrations linked to the "Ascension of Christ" and his "Palio".

Footnotes
Two events characterize the festival: the horse race and the bicycle race.
At the same time as the feast of the Ascension there is also the "Snail Festival" where there are numerous stands where you can taste delicious dishes based on "Crastuna", "Babbuci" and "Ntuppateddi" (among different species of land snails) .
The feast was born as a purely religious feast, taking place mainly in the church as a relationship of devotion and prayer addressed to the Lord symbolically ascended into heaven. Over the years it has been transforming itself, until it assumes the character of a popular festival that is deeply felt from the religious-popular point of view. In Floridia, although the festivity has undergone a continuous evolution, still today folklore is lived and it is in the very air that one breathes: the horse that is still the figure around which the festival revolves, the devotees who pay homage to the Immaculate Conception , the young people dressed up, the Sicilian carts that parade along the course with their harnessed horses.
The horse race which, by now, is one of the very few surviving in Italy, in the original version of a bareback race, has also made a considerable leap in technical quality over the last few years. For example, since 1992 it has been directed by Dr. Pasquale Sedia, director of the Agnano Hippodrome, who has repeatedly declared himself enthusiastic about what he considers a unique tradition of its kind.
