Feast of Our Lady of the Good News
The Madonna della Buona Nuova is co-patron of Aci Trezza and protector of fishermen. The bond of her cult with the sea is made explicit by the ritual actions during the festivities and by some signs that characterize the fercolo carried annually in procession: the anchor in the right hand of the Madonna and the ship in the left hand of the Child. The annual celebrations take place starting from the eve of the first Sunday in September with the transfer of the simulacrum to the high altar, the solemn mass, the procession of the fercolo, the lighting of the lights on the staircase leading to the statue of Mary Help of Christians placed on the Faraglione Grande dei Ciclopi, the traditional auction of the collected gifts and the prayer vigil. During the morning of the following day, the traditional procession of boats takes place, bearing a floral tribute to the statue of the Madonna placed on the Faraglione. In the afternoon, the solemn fercolo procession includes a stop at the Marina for the blessing of the sea and the boats and the fireworks display that the fishermen dedicate to the Madonna, followed by the traditional Calata dell'Angelo. The celebrations conclude, after the lighting of the lights and the fireworks, with the deposition of the statue in the high altar of the Church of San Giovanni Battista, where it remains on display until the last Sunday of September.
