Chronological News
The "Church of the Child", also called "Church of theOverlooking”Was founded by Geronimo Mucaria in the year 1613, under the title of Maria SS. delle Grazie (Act of Notary Vincenzo Zizzo of 4 January 1613). Mucaria had the fresco of the Madonna painted at his own expense (dated 20 August 1609) on a stone slab (slate or blackboard) which is still set in the central altar of the Church.
During the recent renovation of the Church, a stone slab was found which was the upper part of an old fountain set in the wall of the old sacristy, where an inscription "Overlooking 1622 ”, which perhaps gives us testimony of the period of completion of the construction of the Church.

Description
The feast of Maria SS. Child takes place every two years, in the small church dedicated to Maria SS. delle Grazie, in the district Overlooking, a few kilometers from the historic center of Calatafimi. It is a festival that combines faith and folklore, a festival rich in traditions. It is said in fact that, after the First World War, certainly Mr. Giuseppe Avila, devoted to the Madonna delle Grazie, having embraced his four children who had returned unharmed from the war, wanted to reconstruct, due to a promise made, the prospectus of the church in order to give to the same greater dignity. Mr. Avila also took an interest in worship, making you celebrate Holy Mass every Sunday and celebrate the nativity of Maria SS. Child, donating to this end a statuette owned by her family, currently still venerated inside the Church of theOverlooking.
The celebrations in honor of the child Madonna usually begin on the morning of September 5 with firecrackers and the peal of sacred bronzes. Then, in the late afternoon of September 5th, after the Holy Mass celebrated at the Church of San Michele, the historical re-enactment of the transport of Maria SS. Child from the Church of San Michele, where the statuette is kept, to the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, where she will remain during the days of the festivities. The following day, 6 September, also in the late afternoon, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the Holy Mass and the blessing of the girls and boys born in the last year take place at the "Church of the Child". September 7 is generally the day of the celebrations dedicated to games for children, a good opportunity to nourish the most needy and entertain the little ones. Finally, on the morning of September 8, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and last day of celebrations, the firecrackers and the bell of the sacred bronzes follow the tour through the streets of the city of the Calatafimi Segesta musical band. Then, in the evening, after the Eucharistic celebration at the Church of theOverlooking, the Procession of the simulacrum of Maria SS. Little girl with final pyrotechnic games.

There are many initiatives and games organized during the days of the celebrations. Below is an overview of the most typical games for children and teenagers: - “the game of dry pasta” (the winner is the one who first manages to eat a nice plate of spaghetti, without using their hands, to be kept strictly behind the back); - “the game of the pan” (it is necessary to know how to remove, keeping the hands crossed behind the neck, a coin glued with pork fat in the blackened bottom of a pan that hangs from a string); - "u iocu of them pignateddi"(It is necessary to hit, running with a rod in hand, an iron ring hanging from a string, whoever succeeds first chooses a pigniateddu, inside which a prize is hidden, consisting for example of a dove, a rabbit, loose flour and many other surprises); - the tug of war; - the foot race; - the sausage race; - the run of the egg; the wine competition. However, the game that has always been the most successful is “The tree of the Cuccagna”, which consists in reaching the top of a pole about 13 meters high, driven into the ground and covered with abundant soft baby soap; the winner is whoever manages to touch one of the pending prizes first because they are attached to an iron circle covered with bay leaves.
The Church inside has a single nave and a stone arch divides the part of the altar from that of the faithful.
The bell tower was rebuilt by recent administrations. However, the wording "Overlooking 1868 ”, this because the previous bell had presumably been stolen.
