Description

Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix of Elm - 'U Signuri di Maju "

The party takes place near the Church of SS. Crocifisso dell'Olmo, dating back to the 1693th century of the Christian era; restored by the Normans between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries and dedicated to the Madonna dell'Itria; destroyed following the earthquake of XNUMX and rebuilt by the Marquis Filippo Bivona. It seems that the Crucifix, called the Crucifix of Grace, existed since that time; today the SS. Crucifix mounted on a very heavy iron coffin that is carried on the shoulders by barefoot and naked men wearing only the white habit of the brotherhood through some streets of the country on the Second Sunday of May.

The name "Signore dell'Olmo" is due to a legend. In fact, it is said that in an unspecified period the Crucifix was the object of attention by a group of thieves. One of these stuck a rod of elm wood in front of the church door, but this soon afterwards began to sprout, putting the criminals on the run. In fact, a large elm was present until the end of the nineteenth century.

on 11/06/2021 it was also included in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Sicily (REIS). In this regard, see the following press release from the Region:
