Description

Former Monastery of S. Maria dello Spasimo (Tommaso Fazello monumental complex)

The complex consists of a very large building and the Church of S. Maria dello Spasimo. It belonged to the Fazzello family, relatives of the Dominican historian Tommaso Fazzello who suggested giving up the ancient palace and building the monastery of S. Maria dello Spasimo there. Of the ancient structure, probably belonging to another family other than the Fazzellos, traces remain in the Catalan Gothic style, including three windows on Via G. Licata, one of which is mullioned and two mullioned, aligned on the same sill. The interior from the courtyard is characterized by a large arched portal and a splendid example of a Catalan staircase leading to the upper floor.
Currently the complex houses the Museum of the Sea.
