Former Carmelite Reformed Convent

The Reformed Carmelites who followed the rule of S. Alberto arrived in Syracuse in the 1426th century and were placed in the church of Maria SS. Announced outside the walls. In XNUMX they were transferred to the church of S. Maria d'Otrigidia, also outside the walls, and there they erected their convent.
But when the fortifications of Ortigia had to be built in 1555, the Carmelites saw their convent and church demolished, so they were placed inside the walls and obtained some properties from Mrs. Tommasa de Bolena, and with the bishop's permission, they built the new church with the same name of S. Maria dell'Otrigidia and the adjoining convent in the current Piazza del Carmine.
The Carmelites carried out an important activity of faith in the province, so much so that in 1741, Pope Benedict XV obtained that the hermitage of Fra Gerolamo Terzo di Gesù, Maria and Giuseppe della Scala of Noto, was transformed into a convent of the Carmelite fathers of La Scala.
In 1750, Giuseppe Arezzo, Baron della Targia had the Carmelite church and the chapel of the Madonna del Carmine restored. With the law of 1866 the convent was transformed into a barracks for the Royal Carabinieri while the church will remain open to worship. Currently the property is used as a school.
