Description

Cathedral of San Pietro

The church is located in Corso Umberto I °. Built towards the middle of the century. XIV, was partially damaged by the earthquake of 1613, rebuilt, was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. Its reconstruction, starting from the early 1700s, is the work of local master builders, among which Mario Spada from Ragusa and Rosario Boscarino from Modica stand out . The entrance to the church is preceded by a large staircase with the statues of the twelve Apostles, called Santoni by the people.

The baroque façade with two orders has four statues on the second order, depicting San Cataldo, Santa Rosalia, San Pietro and the Madonna. The interior of the church, with three naves and with 14 Corinthian columns and capitals, preserves many works: the floor (1864) enriched with inlays of white marble, polychrome marble and black pitch, the vault which has frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament (1760-1780); a marble statue depicting the "Madonna of Trapani" attributable to a pupil of Francesco Laurana (1470); a marble statue representing the "Lady of Help" (1507); a statuary group, the work of Benedetto Civelletti, depicting St. Peter and the Paralytic (1893): the monumental organ, the work of the Polizzi brothers (1924) consisting of 3200 pipes, 32 registers and two keyboards.
