Description

Cozzo Buffa (Hikkara?)

Cozzo Buffa is a kind of terrace at an altitude of 430 m, which stretches to the east from the coast of Pizzo del Merìo in the Montagna Longa, about 2 km from the town of Carini; it can be reached by car. The surface has an almost circular shape, a diameter of about 300 meters, exploited at
poor pasture, bordering the Celibaida hill to the NE. A landslide brought to light some fragments of Pithoi from the VII-VI century BC: 1-two fragments of grainy dough, with many included, badly cooked, greyish [5YR5 / 1]; very coarse, reddish surfaces: jutting flattened edge, shoulder with triangular or bridge grip. 2- Neck of a pithos similar to the previous one. 3- Hem and shoulder of a pithos with wide belt grip. Compact, grainy mixture, with warm gray inclusions [25YR5 / 0-2] coarse, reddish surfaces [5YR5-6 / 6] F ° 249 III NE Carini; UTM39202226; Altitude: 415 m (Text source: Giovanni Mannino Piero Galati: Carini Archaeological Map)

about Hikkara:

“Not having any foreclosure towards this or that other site, it seems to me appropriate to remember that other sites are topographically suspected as much as that of Carburangeli-Baglio di Carini; perhaps some have some more archaeological elements. Eventually, after so much wandering around
Carburangeli, Giustolisi proposed to identify Hikkara with Monte d'Oro which dominates the town of Montelepre, inland, eight kilometers as the crow flies from the sea of Carini. Recently the identification was accepted by Caterina Greco and Francesca Spatafora. Monte d'Oro - what a good thing
I know, a training ground for clandestine excavators for decades, is a naturally strong site, almost perched, dating back to the VI-III century. BC, if you give credit to Thucydite "a town located on the sea" - it is therefore not Hikkara. The knowledge acquired in dozens and dozens of inspections in the area
they make me point out other more suitable candidates from the topographical point of view, to be ascertained with modest surveys of the archaeological aspect. They are: Pizzo Muletta or Poggio Muletta, archaeologically destroyed and become an Urban Park about one kilometer from the sea. Cozzo Buffa and Celibaida about 5 kilometers from the sea.
