Description

Pizzo Dipilo and Querceti complex on limestone

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA020017 - Hectares: 4387

Description:

The SIC area is entirely included within the Madonie Regional Park; it includes the wooded formations between Collesano and the slopes of Carbonara south of Isnello, also extending to the surrounding hills of Pizzo Dipilo (1385 m), M. Cucullo (1410 m) and M. Milocco (1823 m). From a geological point of view, the area is part of the Monte Mufara-Pizzo di Pilo unit; in particular they are marls, dolomites and breccias, which are found mainly on the southern slope of Pizzo di Pilo, as well as limestone in carbonate platform facies, widespread on the north-western slope of Pizzo Carbonara. Sometimes silico-arenaceous layers of the Numidian Flysch also alternate, on which interesting forest aspects are established, dominated by mesophilic and acidophilic deciduous oak woods. On the basis of the classification of RIVAS-MARTINEZ (1994), the bioclimatic characters of the same area can refer overall to the mesomediterranean thermotype (average temperature: 16-13 ° C), with umbrotype varying between the subhumid (average rainfall: 600-1000 mm) and the humid (average rainfall:> 1000 mm), gradually passing from the hilly area to the submontane and mountain ranges. acidophilic of the Sughera (Genisto-Querco suberis sigmetum) and of the Leptobalana oak (Querco leptobalanae sigmetum), the latter prevailing above all in the Collesano area on clayey-arenaceous substrates. The forest series themselves are largely represented by secondary aspects, as a result of a territorial use that in the past was mainly oriented towards forestry and zootechnical activity. Various other microgeosigmets are also interesting, in particular the one linked to the limestone cliffs.

Extensive forest aspects of significant naturalistic-environmental and landscape interest are represented in the territory. Also represented are exclusive vegetal entities (Genista demarcoi), rare or of significant phytogeographic interest (see section 3.3D). or threatened. Many species of insects endemic to the Madonie live exclusively on this site
