Column of the Immaculate Conception - Palermo
Description

Column of the Immaculate Conception - Palermo

S. Domenico square. In front of the Church of S. Domenico. The column was built in 1728 to fill the square which appeared to be very bare in concomitance with the works for the reconstruction of the facade of the Church of San Domenico. The monument consists of a large marble base surmounted by a high column, always marble, on top of which there is the statue of the Immaculate in bronze, the entire structure designed by Immacolata in 1724 by Tommaso Maria Napoli and built by Giovanni Friend. The style of the structure is typically baroque and in addition to the column we find the states of two popes, also in bronze, placed at the base of the column. At the foot of the entire altar we find a square staircase in Billiemi stone at each end of which we find other marble states depicting angels with wings. The entire work is closed by a protective gate.
