Description

Mother Church of Scicli (San Guglielmo)

church of san guglielmoIn piazza Italia. The church, originally dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola), was annexed to the Jesuit college, demolished in 1960 to make way for the current school building. The complex began to be built even before the earthquake of 1693, its reconstruction took place from the first decades of the eighteenth century. The date 1751 appears on the facade of the church, although presumably the works continued beyond that date. It has been the Mother Church since 1874, the year in which the church of San Matteo was closed. Since 1986 the church has been dedicated to San Guglielmo Eremita. The façade has two orders, with a surface enlivened by pilasters and backstops, including four statues placed on pedestals and decorations with putti heads and leaf motifs. The second order is flanked on the sides by two bell cells and concluded by a tympanum with a concave-convex frame; in the center there is a clock. The church, inside, has a basilica plan with three naves: the central nave is separated from the side ones by large pillars.
