Description

Mother Church of Palazzolo Acreide (San Nicolò)

Archival documents attest the existence of the church from 1215, the year in which it was dedicated to the cult of San Nicolò by the bishop of Syracuse, Bartolomeo Gash.
The church is the largest of those still existing in the country today, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. The facade visible today is instead attributable to a reconstruction carried out after a collapse occurred in 1833
