Church and Monastery of di S. Chiara

The church and monastery of S. Chiara occupy an entire block; the shorter side is entirely occupied by the church which overlooks the important via Garibaldi (once via S. Filippo). Forward, along the via Garibaldi. The monastery, now the seat of municipal offices, was built in the area of the block behind the church choir. The design of the facade of the church is by S. Palazzotto (mid-eighteenth century). Inside, preceded by a short staircase, you can see a wooden panel with depictions of scenes from the Bible. Above the entrance is a splendid gilded choir with the image of S. Chiara. There are five altars: that of the Immaculate Conception, that of S. Lorenzo, the richly decorated high altar on which the statues of S. Chiara and S. Francesco rest, the altar of S. Chiara and that of the SS. Crucifix with a precious reliquary. In the center of the vault is a large fresco representing The Triumph of the Poor Clares. It is a work of 1766 by the artist Olivio Sozzi. Among the most precious things in the church is the beautiful polychrome marble floor.
