Carmelite Church and Convent

The Carmel in Chiaramonte Gulfi was founded in 1660, about one hundred years after the foundation of the first Monastery of St. Teresa, in Avila, first as a "conservatory" for orphaned and poor virgins, with an adjoining church dedicated to St. Anna, and later transformed in the Teresian monastery, and dedicated to St. Teresa of Jesus.

Following the damage caused by the earthquake of 1693, the church of S. Anna was rebuilt and, obviously, also dedicated to S. Teresa.

Of the first nuns we know only a few names. The first, to whom we owe the foundation of the Teresian monastery, is Sister Teresa Ventura, coming from one of the two Teresian Carmels of Comiso and perhaps related to Mrs Eleonora Cerruto, married to Ventura, who wanted to use her assets in the foundation of the Conservatory.

In 1866 the monastery was suppressed, but it was immediately bought back by the nuns then living, as private individuals, being a state property.
