Church of Santa Maria delle Giummarre
Near via Valverde, near Viale della Vittoria, is the Church of St. Maria delle Giummare, which owes its picturesque name to the presence in that place of a thick vegetation of palmettes, called “giummi” in popular jargon.
The sixteenth-century envelope of the building hides ancient Norman origins ... in fact this building corresponds to one of the monasteries wanted by Juliet, daughter of Roger II, who contributed after the Norman conquest to provide Sciacca with a considerable number of churches and monasteries ... restoration interventions undergone by the building in 1500 and around 1624 make what remains of the original layout difficult to read. The facade of the church, dating back to 1570, is between two crenellated towers and suggests the image of a fortified palace; an elegant Baroque portal then refines the facade which results as a whole a harmonious composition of forms belonging to different languages ... inside it is possible to admire a beautiful Madonna delle Grazie in marble, from the Laurana school, some splendid paintings and a monstrance of silver, work of the sculptors Juvara da Messina.
