Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and Convent of the Capuchins
Description

Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and Convent of the Capuchins

The Convent of the Capuchins and the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli built from 1695 to 1710 are located at the foot of the town on the southern slope of Monte Marone, above the Via Nazionale and form a single, grandiose quadrangular building.
The building consists of four wings, of which the Church occupies the north-west one. This has a rectangular plan, with two naves, covered by barrel vaults with lunettes. A real profusion of woodwork with inlay constitutes the main ornament, the work entirely of friars, who spared neither time nor effort. The masterpiece of Baroque art can be found on the high altar, formed by a very high rear and the "sacred custody".
The latter is conical in shape, decorated all around by different architectural orders, superimposed on each other, all in a single style, with twisted columns for two thirds of their height and a third decorated with very fine bas-reliefs; statuettes, little angels in relief and seraphim with other very varied ornaments adorn the valuable wooden case.
In the middle of the wooden poster is attached a very large canvas, painted by friar Umile da Messina, dated 1644. Above this canvas, there are three other small pictures, included in the same set of frames: in the middle is the figure of the Eternal Father .
Of particular interest is a small but valuable museum of Capuchin relics housed in the old crypt of the church, which is accessed from the ancient cloister of the convent.
