Description

Church of Santa Caterina di Alessandria - Taormina

It was built, with a single nave, in the first half of the 1600s on the ruins of the Odeon, built in turn on the remains of a Greek temple probably dedicated to Aphrodite.

The facade features a statue of Santa Caterina sculpted in 1705 by Paolo Greco.

The interior contains the marble statue of Santa Caterina dating back to 1493, coming from the ancient church of S. Caterina fuori le mura, the current Capuchin church.

Inside, some restorations in the 70s of the twentieth century brought to light the ruins of walls and cobblestones from the Greco-Roman era that were enclosed by a wrought iron railing.
