Church of Santa Barbara
Description

Church of Santa Barbara - Ragusa

LOCATION: Via Acquila Sveva.

DATING: XX SEC.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: The church is very small, it is located in Ibla, it is possible to reach it from Piazza della Repubblica, taking Via Aquila Sveva, to the right of the church SS. Souls in Purgatory, and covering a hundred meters. The façade of the church is very simple, it has a window with three small columns. The bell tower, built separately, has the shape of a castle tower and has an empty niche, originally probably containing a statue of Santa Barbara. There is no certain information about its foundation, it is likely that it existed before the earthquake of 1696. Dangerous, in 1914-1915 it was demolished and almost entirely rebuilt by the Nifosì brothers who had their house next door. The interior had three altars, on the central one there was a painting depicting a gendarme in uniform from the 1800s, with a rifle and bayonet, who guards the Holy Virgin of Nicomedia. The strangeness arises from the fact that Santa Barbara of Nicomedia (Asia Minor) lived between the third and fourth centuries. AD and was killed, for her Christian faith, by Father Dioscoro, who personified the most fanatic enemy of Christians in the city of Nicomedia. The church no longer open to the public, it is currently home to a local choral group. FILE: Helios Study Center
