Description

Church of San Nicolò di Bari

A church of San Nicolò existed in Alcamo in 1430, at the height of the main door of the mother church and the Liotta family had the right of patronage over it. In 1558, one of their descendants, Nicolò di Gregorio, granted Pietro Mastrandrea, rector of the Confraternity of the Whites, to tear down the ancient church and build the current one.

After the dissolution of the Company, from 1896 the church housed the headquarters of the “Filippi” Monte di Prestiti by the Congregation of Charity, which destroyed the altar to put a safe.

Deconsecrated since the middle of the last century, the church is now the seat of the URP office (Public Relations office) and the tourist office of the Municipality.

Gracious example of early Renaissance architecture, this building includes the church and a residential house with two balconies and a terrace on the second floor: this house was once used by the Confraternity of the Whites.

The church, quite small, has a façade embellished by a mullioned window which ends with a serrated frame; it was made by the Palermo architect Girolamo Vicchiuzzo, Palermo architect and carver; in the last century a false balcony was added. The finely carved column at the corner of the façade is certainly noteworthy.

The interior has a single nave, with two spans and a cross vault; on the main altar there was a painting depicting Saint Nicholas with a group of poor people, made in 1599 by the Trapani painter Narciso Guidone, which was later lost. (Source: wikipedia)
