Church of San Matteo - Scicli

church of san matteo

Monument included in the Management Plan of the Unesco site "The late Baroque cities of the Val di Noto". Symbol of Scicli and Mother Church until 1874, it is located on the hill of San Matteo, site of the old city. It is the oldest ecclesiastical building in the city, some historians trace its foundation back to the early Christian era, others to the Norman domination. Certainly there was a large basilica with three naves on the same site during the Middle Ages with a high bell tower located to the south, behind the apses; the current plan should broadly reflect the medieval one: three naves with five bays that flow into a central space formed by the transept and three rectangular apses.
