Church of San Giovanni Evangelista - Modica
Dating back to the sixteenth century. Rebuilt over the years. The last reconstruction dates back to 1894 in the Baroque style. The church of S. Giovanni Evangelista, is located in the upper part of the city and is placed at the top of a wide staircase that gives the temple momentum and majesty. The current church is the result of various construction phases during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, after the earthquake that damaged it considerably. The reconstruction took place starting from 1695 on a project by the Modica architect Don Silvestro Callisti. A second building phase took place in the last four decades of the eighteenth century. In the 70s work was done on the construction of capitals and carvings and for the coverage of the main nave, the transept and the apse. The façade, designed in 1839 by Salvatore Rizza, is placed at the top of the steps along which there are twenty-six pillars that supported as many statues: today only three remain.
