Church of San Giacomo - Caltagirone

From Piazza Municipio along via Vittorio Emanuele you get to Largo San Giacomo where the church of San Giacomo is located, built in the Norman era and destroyed by the earthquake of 1693, it was immediately rebuilt. The baroque façade, on two orders, dates back to the early 1700s. The bronze portal is contemporary. The bell tower decorated with four terracotta statues was added in the nineteenth century. The interior has a basilica plan with three naves and preserves interesting works including: sculptures by the Gagini: the marble coat of arms of the city above the central portal is by Gian Domenico, the portal of the Relics in the left transept and the stone arch carved in the chapel of the Sacramento is by Antonuzzo; a canvas representing the Martyrdom of St. James attributed to Filippo Paladini; a canvas representing the Madonna d'Odigitria attributed to Zoppo di Ganci; The paintings of the vault by Giuseppe and Vincenzo Vaccaro; An early sixteenth century black wooden Crucifix attributed to Giovannello de 'Matinati and, in the presbytery, some canvases by Filippo Paladino.
