Description

Church of S Maria di Monte Olivero (Badia Nuova)

Monte di Pietà district. Via Coronation. Erected in the seventeenth to a project by Mariano Smiriglio.

The facade of 1628, between two high lateral pilasters, consists on the first order of a central entrance bordered by large windows with grates. The portal is composed of two gray marble columns with Ionic capitals surmounted by an arched and broken tympanum which houses a crowned coat of arms supported by two angels, bearing the Franciscan emblem. The Franciscan coat of arms depicts two arms crossed around the Cross: that of the naked Christ and the other of Saint Francis covered with the habit aimed at representing conformity to the teachings of Christ.

On the second order, delimited by a pair of windows with gratings, there is the niche framed by pilasters and triangular tympanum containing the statue of the Madonna of Monte Oliveto
