Church of S. Maria di Betlem

Church of S. Maria di Betlem

The Church of S. Maria di Betlem is one of the three ancient collegiate (from 1645) of the city, and dates back to the fourteenth century. The facade is from the end of the sixteenth century in the lower part, while it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, to be completed in 1821 in its second order. Inside it hides a very valuable Palatine Chapel also known as the Cabrera Chapel (1693th century, National Monument), in late Gothic style, which survived the earthquake of XNUMX and set in the new XNUMXth century architecture. The entrance arch to the Chapel (which owes its name to the fact that it was dedicated to the Cabrera counts present at the Castle of Modica in the second half of the fifteenth century), with Arabic, Norman and Catalan decorative elements, is one of the most beautiful monuments that architecture produced in Sicily at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
