Description

Church of S. Maria del Monte - Caltagirone

church of santa maria del monte

It is located at the top of the steps of Santa Maria del Monte in via ex Matrice. The church of Byzantine origin was destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. Rebuilt in the second half of the eighteenth century on a project by Francesco Battaglia. The bell tower is the work of Natale Bonaiuto. The façade is on two orders and is closed by a curved tympanum. The interior, with three naves, preserves interesting works: a 1492th-century wooden table known as the Madonna dei Conadomini painted on both sides (on one side the Virgin sitting with the child in her arms is represented, on the other rises from the tomb); a Madonna and Child attributed to Domenico Gagini (1592); a wooden statue representing Christ at the column by Paolo Nigro (XNUMX). The altarpieces and the paintings on the vault are by the Vaccaro brothers (XNUMXth century)
