Church of S. Maria del Gesù
The Church of S. Maria del Gesù (1478-1481) and the adjoining convent (1478-1520), declared a National Monument as they pre-existed the earthquakes of 1542, 1613 and 1693, belonged to the Observant Franciscan Minor Friars. The Church was built by restoring a pre-existing Franciscan church already present at least since 1343, by the will of Countess Giovanna Ximenes, in order to celebrate, in January 1481, the wedding of her daughter Anna Cabrera with Federico Enriquez, first cousin of the King of Spain. Ferdinand the Catholic. Unfortunately, the church and the convent are currently not open to visitors, as the former convent has been a prison since 1865. However, the fifteenth-century façade of the church is visible from the outside of the fence.
